Arson charge laid in public-housing apartment fire

A 35-year-old woman accused of intentionally starting a fire that caused $50,000 damage to a public-housing building south of the downtown has been arrested.

Firefighters were called to 241 Simcoe Street just after 10 a.m. on Tuesday after fire broke out inside an eighth floor unit. The fire filled the hall with smoke and led to the evacuation of the 12 storey highrise.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze relatively quickly and ventilated the building. No one was injured.

Investigators with the fire department, the police street crime unit, and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal probed the cause of the blaze and deemed it suspicious.

Jessyca Rowe of London was charged by way of warrant on Thursday with arson with disregard for human life and possession of property obtained by crime.

She was taken into custody at 7:40 a.m. on Friday and was scheduled to make a court appearance later in the day, police said.
