'If anyone deserves this, it’s you': London man wins $250K

A 29-year-old London man plans to add to his daughter's Registered Education Savings Plan and help his grandmother after winning $250,000 with an instant lottery ticket.

Joshawa Sturgeon decided to buy a Big Spin Instant ticket after watching a friend play. He said the cashier at the store had to explain the win to him after the virtual wheel landed on 'big spin' and the terminal locked.

"I was thinking yeah right, no way,” Sturgeon said while picking up his winnings at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.

The culinary arts worker called his cousin immediately to share the good news.

"She said, ‘no way. If anyone deserves this, it’s you.’ It was really nice,” he added.

With his winnings, Sturgeon plans on helping both his daughter and grandmother while saving a little for himself.

"I’m going to put some into an RRSP for myself, and add to my daughter’s RESP. There are so many possibilities. I could invest in a business or maybe use some as a down payment for a house. I also want to help my grandmother. I’m going to make the most of this money,” Sturgeon said.

He is the third London man to claim a six-figure lottery prize this week. Jose Nunes of London won $100,000 after matching the last six of seven Encore numbers in exact order in the January 11 Daily Keno draw. Hussain Al-Ekabi, a scientific conference organizer from London, claimed his prize after matching the last six of seven Encore numbers in the exact order for last year’s August 28 6/49 draw to win $100,000.

All three men cashed in on their winning tickets at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto, which only recently reopened after being closed for several months due to COVID-19.
