Suspect in alleged Liberian warlord's shooting death arrested

A North York man wanted for second degree murder in the shooting death of an alleged Liberian warlord in London last month has now been arrested.

Keiron Gregory was taken into custody in North Bay on Tuesday, London police have confirmed. The 22-year-old had been on the run for nearly a month.

Police had obtained a warrant for his arrest on June 25, four days after Bill Horrace, 44, was gunned down outside of a home on Pochard Lane. Prior to the deadly shooting, four men forced their way into the home. That was followed by an altercation, which ended when one of the men shot Horrace. The men then took off and a 911 call was made. Emergency crews rushed Horrace to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Horrace, who lived in Toronto but spend time in London, was allegedly a member of the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), a rebel group that was active during the First Liberian Civil War between 1989 to 1996. The 44-year-old acknowledged his ties to NPFL during an interview with Maclean’s magazine in 2009.

Horrace and the men under his command were accused of “horrendous atrocities” during their time with NPFL. However, despite also being under investigation in Canada, none of the allegations against him have been proven in court.

Police have not indicated whether Horrace's death was linked to his ties to the NPFL.

Gregory has been returned to London and is scheduled to make a court appearance in relation to the second degree murder charge against him on Wednesday afternoon.

The suspect's father, Toronto police Detective Constable Trevor Gregory, 46, was charged last week in connection with the case. The elder Gregory faces one count of breach of trust and has been suspended with pay.

Two North York women, Tianna Almeida, 22, and Tera Amoatemah, 22, are also charged with being accessories after the fact to the offence of assault with a weapon. The pair are slated to answer to the charge in court on September 28.

The search for three other males, who have not been identified, but are believed to have been involved continues. To date, no charges have been laid against those individuals.

Two people arrested with Gregory in North Bay have since been released unconditionally.
