Demand for donated school supplies expected to jump

With a surge in demand for school supplies for less-fortunate kids expected this September, the Thames Valley Education Foundation (TVEF) has issued a call for donations earlier than usual.

TVEF, in partnership with United Way Elgin Middlesex and the Salvation Army, collect everything from backpacks to binders, to pencils each year for their Best First Day school supplies drive. The aim of the drive is to ensure every school-aged kid across the region returns to the classroom with a backpack full of essentials.

"Although we don’t quite know what school will look like this fall, we do know that students will still require the necessary supplies to participate in learning,” TVEF lead Jackie Ellefsen said in a statement.

It is believed the number of students in need will be greater this year than in years past as the COVID-19 pandemic has cost many parents their jobs and left them struggling financially. That has prompted the foundation to launch the drive earlier than normal. Typically the call for donations is issued at the start of August.

Last year, the drive saw more than 3,800 backpacks full of school supplies handed out to students ranging in age within the Thames Valley District School Board, the London District Catholic School board and in nearby Indigenous communities.

“The first day of school is exciting for many families, but if you’re having difficulty managing rent and food, it can be hugely stressful,” added Kelly Ziegner, president and CEO of United Way Elgin Middlesex. “Thanks to the generosity of area businesses, individuals and volunteers, we can provide thousands of kids with those basic items they need to start the school year off right.”

Information about where donations can be dropped off and how to purchase virtual items can be found at www.bestfirstday.ca. Families in need of a supply filled backpack for their child should contact their school directly.
