One new COVID-19 case reported in London-area

One additional person has been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the London-area, while another person who previously tested positive has now recovered.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported the single new laboratory-confirmed case on Monday. It brings the region's total since the start of the pandemic to 640. Over the weekend there were a total of six newly confirmed cases -- one on Saturday and five on Sunday.

There has not been a death related to the virus in over a month, leaving the area's death toll unchanged at 57.

The number of resolved cases in London and Middlesex went up by one over the last 24 hours, with another previously infected person getting the all-clear from health officials. There have now been 565 resolved cases.

Local long-term care homes and retirement facilities have been free of outbreaks for more than one week.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, there were no new cases or COVID-19 related deaths confirmed on Monday. Southwestern Public Health, the region’s health unit, said the total number of cases remains at 87. Only one new case was reported in the two counties over the weekend. The region's death toll remains at five, with no additional deaths reported since July 3.

Provincially, the number of new COVID-19 cases dropped slightly to 116 over the last 24 hours. That is down from 129 on Sunday and 130 on Saturday. It is considered another positive sign as the Ford government prepares to move much of Ontario into Stage 3 of reopening on Friday.

Stage 3 will see nearly all businesses and public spaces, including gyms, in-door dining, and movie theatres, reopen with safety measures in place. Public gathering sizes will also be allowed to increase to 50 people indoors and 100 people outdoors.

"Having seen a continued decline in the number of new #COVID19 cases as the province entered Stage 2, and with hospitalizations being at all-time lows, today we’re providing details about Stage 3 of our plan to continue the safe and gradual reopening the province," tweeted Health Minister Christine Elliott.

Twenty-nine of the province’s 34 public health units reported five or fewer cases of the virus on Monday. There have now been a total of 36,839 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the province since January.

The number of deaths related to the virus rose by three since Sunday to 2,722.

A total of 32,663 Ontarians previously diagnosed with COVID-19 have now recovered.

Over the last 24 hours, there were just over 25,000 tests conducted in Ontario.
