Woman rescued after falling down embankment along Thames River

London firefighters had to rescue a woman from the Thames River after she fell down an embankment in the SoHo neighbourhood.

Fire crews, police, and paramedics were called to the area of Grey Street and Richmond Street around 11:15 a.m. on Monday.

"The drop is approximately 10 metres so it is a fair distance to fall," said Platoon Chief Kirk Loveland. "Using our water team we were able to launch at the Richmond Street Bridge, float down the river, pick up the patient and float a little further to the Carfrae Street Bridge where the bank of the river is not so steep. That made it easier to carry the patient up to the EMS vehicle."

The woman was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Loveland noted the area where the woman fell is steps away from a bike path and is advising Londoners to always use caution when near the river.

"Londoners need to remember to be careful around the riverbank, especially where it is quite steep. It only takes a second to go over the edge if you're not careful," said Loveland.
