UPDATE: One person dead following downtown apartment fire

A man who was taken to the hospital following an apartment fire Saturday evening has died.

The blaze broke out at 700 King Street in a fifth-floor unit around 9 p.m.

The London Fire Department said they found the individual unconscious inside the unit after conducting a search and rescue. On Sunday, officials confirmed the middle-aged man was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Crews cleared the scene by 11:30 p.m. after working on ventilating smoke from the affected floors. The Ontario Fire Marshall has been called in to investigate. No other details have been provided.

It was the second apartment fire in the city on Saturday. Crews also spent the afternoon battling a blaze at a highrise on Jalna Boulevard, which left one person in the hospital.
