Nearly a dozen new COVID-19 cases confirmed in London-area

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported 11 new cases of COVID-19 in the region on Tuesday.

The newly confirmed cases bring the area's total number since the outbreak began to 484. It is the first time in over a week that the number of single-day cases has been in the double digits. One of the new cases involves a staff member at a local long-term care home, while two employees and one resident of area retirement homes have tested positive for the virus.

Public health officials have said to date there have been 95 cases in area nursing homes and 62 cases in retirement facilities.

An employee at the No Frills at 1275 Highbury Ave. has also tested positive for the virus, the grocery store confirmed in a social media post on Tuesday. The infected staffer has not worked at the store since May 12. Since then the facility has undergone additional cleaning and reopened to the public.

There were no additional deaths reported over the past 24 hours. The COVID-19 related death toll stands at 48 in London and Middlesex County.

There are 19 people diagnosed with COVID-19 in the care of the London Health Sciences Centre, only one of whom is listed in the intensive care unit.

The number of people who have recovered from the virus in the region is 337.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, reported one new case and no additional deaths Tuesday. The two counties have not seen any COVID-19 related deaths since April 22. Their total number of confirmed cases is 65, with four deaths. Fifty-six of the cases have been resolved.

Provincially, there was a 1.9 per cent spike in the number of new cases. Public health officials said there were 427 new cases on Tuesday, bringing the total since the outbreak began to 23,384. It is the first time in over a week the number of new cases reported in a single day was back in the 400s.

The death in the province toll rose to 1,919, with 15 more deaths over the past 24 hours.

A total of 17,898 people have recovered from the virus.
