Just because social gathering restrictions have led to the cancellation of Victoria Day weekend festivities, that doesn't mean Londoners have to forego the traditional fireworks display.
Tourism London has teamed up with Snapd Inc. to offer a virtual fireworks show on Monday night.
By downloading the free Snapd Hub app from the App Store or Google Play and creating an account, anyone across the country can view the fireworks through augmented reality.
"There is something really magical about live events, whether it be sporting events, concerts, or fireworks on a long weekend," said Natalie Wakabayashi, director of culture and entertainment at Tourism London. "This is a great way to really bring everyone together, while still physically distancing of course, to enjoy some of those magical moments in a way in which we can right now given the times."
The virtual fireworks display will go live at 8 p.m. on Monday and last for a couple of minutes.
"After that it will be available all evening long should you miss the 8 p.m. start window or if you want to watch it again and experience it once more," said Wakabayashi.
Snapd Inc. has approached other cities in addition to London about the virtual fireworks and is already planning "something big" for Canada Day. Since Tourism London began spreading the word about the Victoria Day show, they have received lots of positive feedback, added Wakabayashi.
"We'be been really happy with the response that we have gotten," said Wakabayashi. "Nothing replaces an actual live event with everyone getting together in a park to watch with 'oohs' and 'ahhs 'and the thunderous noise of the fireworks, but we are all doing our best to try to create a little magic on the long weekend."
