A rainy forecast expected over the long weekend could cause potential flooding in some areas according to the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority. (UTRCA)
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement on Saturday for most of southwestern Ontario. The system has the potential to bring 30-60 millimetres of rain beginning on Sunday before it tapers off early Tuesday.
The UTRCA does not anticipate any serious flooding, but significant rainfall amounts could cause local streams and the Thames River to flood in low lying areas. The conservation authority expects peak flows in upstream areas near Stratford, and Woodstock by Monday morning, and by early Tuesday for areas around London.
Flood control reservoirs at the Fanshawe, Wildwood and Pittock Conservation Areas are at seasonal levels and will be operated to reduce downstream flooding.
Residents are advised to exercise caution and to keep children and pets away from waterways as cold, fast-moving water can be hazardous. Officials are monitoring the situation for any changes as the system moves in.
Meanwhile, a rainfall warning was issued on Sunday morning for Elgin County, Simcoe, Norfolk County, Oxford County and County of Brant.
