Gift card auction to help local businesses during pandemic

As businesses struggle during the COVID-19 pandemic, an online auction organized by a London radio station is aiming to help them weather the storm.

The 'Support Local Auction' launched this week and will run until Tuesday, May 19. It was organized by radio station Classic Rock 98.1, which is owned by Blackburn Radio Inc., the owner of BlackburnNews.com.

Gift cards from several local businesses are available to the highest bidder. The goal is to help the businesses now so that, when the economy re-opens, these businesses will have endured and will be ready to thrive again.

" Local businesses are the backbone of our community and have suffered greatly in this difficult time," said Classic Rock 98.1 Operations Manager Jon Eisler. "Being a local business ourselves, we understand the impact this has had on business owners, their families, their staff, and their business. This is our way of trying to help them by having our loyal listeners buy gift cards for their favourite business now to spend them when we open again. It also helps our listeners save a few bucks. It's a win-win for everyone."
