With a number of fundraising efforts affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Big Brothers Big Sisters is starting a new campaign online for London's at-risk children.
On Thursday, Big Brothers Big Sisters of London and Area launched a virtual fundraiser called Bake for Kids’ Sake, which asks participants to raise funds through baking an #IgnitePotential-themed dessert. The theme focuses on fireworks, excitement and sparks.
The fundraiser runs from May 14-18 and Big Brothers Big Sisters will be giving away two prizes of 100 downtown dollars, which can be spent at most businesses in the downtown core. The prizes will be given to whoever submits the most creative dessert and to the person with the highest fundraising total.
Due to the COVID-19 crisis, Big Brothers Big Sisters' Big Bash gala had to be postponed until the fall, and the group's summer Lawn Bowl for Kids’ Sake event has been cancelled. While the pandemic has taken its toll, it hasn't stopped the organization from focusing on children’s health and wellbeing.
“The hardships of COVID-19 are concerning for all of us, but vulnerable families and children will suffer the most," said Executive Director Janet Tufts. "We’re here to ensure our 'Littles' know they’re not alone during this difficult time. We’re committed to keeping our mentoring relationships going and continue to be amazed by the creative ways our 'Bigs' are finding to stay connected to their 'Littles', including making virtual calls and dropping off care packages."
