SIU probing man's fall from London high-rise

The province's police watchdog is investigating after a man fell from the 15th floor of a public housing building as London police tried to take him into custody.

Police were called to the high-rise at 85 Walnut St. in regard to a man in distress around 11:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The door to the 15th-floor unit where the 26-year-old man was inside was barricaded when officers arrived. They attempted to talk to the man, whom they were trying to apprehend under the Mental Health Act.

A short time later, the man fell from the balcony. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident and has assigned two investigators and one forensic investigator to the case.

London police are directing all inquiries about the investigation to the SIU.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the SIU lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or 647-297-0142. Video evidence can also be uploaded to the SIU's website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
