Overnight on-street parking ban lifted

Penalty-free overnight on-street parking has returned in London, this time for a six-month stretch.

The city lifted its ban on overnight street parking as of Friday. Drivers can now leave their vehicles parked on many city streets between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. without the need of an overnight parking pass.

In March, city council amended the overnight parking program to ease restrictions from May 1 to October 31, extending the overnight street parking allowance by roughly two months. Prior to this year, drivers could only park on city streets overnight from Victoria Day weekend to Labour Day.

The changes also allow for vehicles to be left parked in the same spot for 18 hours, up from 12 hours.

"This applies to personal vehicles only and not to commercial motor vehicles, mobile homes or trailers as these have their own parking regulations," the city said in a statement.

Parking remains prohibited in front of fire hydrants, on boulevards, and on front lawns, as well as on a handful of residential streets. A list of streets where parking restrictions will remain in place can be found by clicking here.

The overnight street parking ban will return on November 1.
