One person is dead after fire tore through an apartment in downtown Simcoe late Monday night.
A Norfolk OPP officer was on patrol when he spotted flames coming from the apartment on Culver Street around 10 p.m.
"The officer, along with a secondary officer, went into the building and was able to successfully remove an occupant from the lower apartments and immediately contacted the Norfolk County Fire Department and Norfolk County Paramedic Services," said Constable Ed Sanchuk.
Firefighters arrived on scene and located a second person in one of the upper-level units. That individual was rushed to hospital where they were pronounced dead. The name, age, and gender of the deceased have not been released.
Police did not comment on the condition of the person rescued from the lower apartment.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is in its early stages, said Sanchuk.
The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has been contacted.
