Arson charge laid in Salvation Army shelter fire

A 28-year-old London man has been charged with arson in connection with Thursday's fire at the Salvation Army’s Centre of Hope.

Firefighters were called to the facility on Wellington Street after thick smoke filled the third floor around 6:20 a.m. The blaze, which was contained to one apartment, was quickly extinguished by fire crews and deemed suspicious.

The fire led to the evacuation of the shelter and saw a staff member sent to hospital due to smoke inhalation.

Damage to the third-floor unit was said to be extensive. There was also smoke damage throughout the same floor.

London police arrested a man at the scene. He has since been charged with one count of arson causing damage to property.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in relation to the charge on June 17.
