Pair charged in 36 ATM thefts across southern Ontario

Two men from Ohsweken are facing a combined 439 charges in connection with three dozen ATM thefts in 13 different cities in southern Ontario, including London and Woodstock.

Brantford and Six Nations police launched a joint investigation into the string of robberies in September of last year. In total, there were 36 ATM thefts from grocery stores, nail salons, convenience stores, and other businesses in Brantford, London, Woodstock, Pelham, Niagara Falls, Hamilton, Cambridge, Kitchener, St. Catharines, Burlington, Oakville, Fonthill, and Guelph. All of the thefts involved a stolen pick-up truck.

Police estimate $100,000 cash was stolen from the 36 ATMs. The break and enters also caused a combined $180,000 damage to the targeted businesses.

Following nearly seven months of investigation, police raided a home on First Line Road in Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. Officers seized $45,000 cash, 27 guns, and a stolen 2015 Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Two men and a woman, all from Ohsweken, were arrested.

Steven Wade Vanevery, 35, has been charged with 206 offences including 36 counts of break and enter, unauthorized possession of firearms, 28 counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000, and 27 counts of possession of break-in instruments.

Shawn Erwin Sandy, 43, has been charged with 233 offences including 36 counts of break and enter with intent, 27 counts of disguise with intent, 36 counts of mischief over $5,000, and theft of a vehicle.

A 30-year-old Ohsweken woman has been charged with one count each of careless storage of firearms, careless storage of ammunition, and unauthorized possession of firearms.
