Southwest London barn fire deemed suspicious

A barn fire in southwest London is being investigated as a possible arson.

Firefighters were called about the blaze at 4195 Bostwick Rd., west of Wonderland Road South around 7:50 a.m. on Wednesday.

"Probably 80 per cent of the structure was on fire [when crews arrived]. There was heavy black smoke in the area," said District Fire Chief Dave Hood.

With no fire hydrant close enough to the scene, crews had to bring in a water shuttle and set up a porta-tank to battle the flames.

"Once we got that set up it went well, the fire was under control within an hour," said Hood.

No one was hurt in the fire and no livestock were being housed in the barn. However, half a dozen vehicles that were being stored inside the structure were destroyed.

Damage has been estimated at $350,000.

A fire investigator and London police are looking into the cause of the fire, but police officials confirmed Wednesday evening that the fire has been deemed suspicious in nature.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the London Police Service at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
