Cause of $100K west London fire under investigation

Local fire investigators, police, and the Ontario Fire Marshal are investigating after fire caused extensive damage to a west London home.

Firefighters were called to the house on Carol Street, north of Springbank Drive around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

"When fire crews arrived there was heavy smoke blanketing the area. It was actually difficult to confirm what house was on fire because the amount of smoke," said Platoon Chief Shawn Fitzgerald. "Crews saw fire venting from a rear bedroom window. They attacked the fire with multiple hand-lines and the fire was extinguished within about 30 minutes."

The occupants of the home were able to escape before firefighters arrived. One man was treated at the scene for a minor cut to his hand.

Damage to the home is considered to be substantial.

"There was extensive fire damage to a bedroom. Heat and heavy smoke damage throughout the property. There is no dollar estimate of the damage yet, but it will be well in excess of $100,000," said Fitzgerald.

London police guarded the scene overnight. The Ontario Fire Marshal is expected to join the search for the cause of the fire Wednesday.
