Teacher strikes leave thousands of London area students off

Thousands of students in both the public and Catholic London area school boards have the day off Tuesday as their teachers hit the picket line.

Elementary and high schools within the Thames Valley District school board will remain closed for the day as rotating one-day strikes by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) continue.

All teachers within the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association, including those in the London District Catholic school board, are also taking part in a province-wide walkout.

The three strikes mean more than 100,000 London-area students won't have class Tuesday.

Schools will reopen on Wednesday. However, students in the public elementary system will only be back in class for one day before getting another day off on Thursday when ETFO will hold a province-wide strike.

The Ford government is currently involved in tense contract talks with all four of Ontario’s major teacher unions, all of which are engaged in some form of job action, including work-to-rule campaigns.
