A 40-year-old Ingersoll man is dead after three transport trucks collided on Highway 401 in Newcastle, Ontario.
The OPP were called to the crash in the eastbound lanes of the major highway just east of Mill Street around 5 a.m Tuesday. Police have determined a straight truck rear-ended and became wedged under a disabled tractor trailer that was sitting on the right shoulder of the 401. The two drivers were standing outside of their vehicles when a third transport truck, loaded with plastic pellets, sideswiped the straight truck.
"[The 40-year-old Ingersoll man] was outside of his vehicle when the third vehicle struck the second truck, pinning him between some vehicles and killing him as a result," Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a video posted to Twitter. "The collision scene here obviously is horrific."
The name of the man killed has not been released.
The highway was closed for roughly eight hours to allow for investigation by the OPP collision reconstruction team and clean up of debris.
