Rainy, windy weekend on tap

A storm system packing a messy combination of freezing rain, heavy rain, and strong winds is expected to hammer southwestern Ontario this weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the entire southern half of the province, including London and Middlesex County.

Light rain or drizzle will start to fall on Friday, becoming heavy rain by the end of the day, the national weather agency said. The heavy rain will continue Saturday and Sunday. Up to 50 millimetres of rain is expected.

Strong winds will develop Sunday morning adding to the mess. There is also a risk of freezing rain both days.

"There remains considerable uncertainty with exact rainfall amounts along with the location of freezing rain. Warnings may be issued as the event draws nearer," Environment Canada said in its weather statement. "Travel is expected to be impacted throughout southern Ontario Saturday into Sunday."

The temperature will jump well above the seasonal average of -2.3 C to 7 C on Friday. Highs of 8 C and 1 C are forecast for Saturday and Sunday.
