The province's police watchdog has launched an investigation into the death of a woman who died after being arrested by London police.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, the 28-year-old woman was arrested by London police on the afternoon of Saturday, November 2. She was taken to police headquarters where whe was put in a cell. Around 9:45 the next morning, the woman was found in medical distress in her cell. She was given Naloxone and taken to hospital. She died in hospital on Wednesday, November 13.

"On Sunday, November 3, 2019, the SIU was notified by LPS of the woman’s hospitalization. Based on the information received by the SIU at the time, it was determined the incident did not fall under the SIU’s jurisdiction," the SIU said in a statement issued Monday. "The SIU did not invoke its mandate, but continued to monitor the woman’s condition. "

The SIU says it invoked its mandate after getting more information. Four investigators and a forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The Special Investigations Unit is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
