Mother, child nearly hit crossing street

Provincial police in Norfolk are urging drivers to be patient at crosswalks after a woman and her 4-year-old child were nearly hit while crossing the street in Simcoe.

The close call happened on Parker Drive Monday morning as a crossing guard was helping the mother and young child get across the street safely. While the trio were mid-way across the road a pickup truck sped through, nearly hitting them, OPP said.

The crosswalk where this incident happened is just down from a school and is frequently used by elementary students.

"We're just asking people to use some common sense. You have several people go to and from school, young children, and we are just asking drivers to make sure they pay attention to the crossing guards," said Constable Ed Sanchuk. "Have some patiences and wait for the people to get safely across the road and onto the sidewalk."

The fine for failing to stop for a school crossing guard is $180.
