St. Thomas police foil attempted arson

Police in St. Thomas are looking for information after an attempted arson at a downtown building.

According to police, officers on routine patrol were walking on the north side of Talbot Street near Ross Street around 4 a.m. Thursday. While checking businesses for suspicious activity, they noticed that someone had tied a blanket to the door handle of the unidentified building. A small stack of papers was piled at the base of the door, lit on fire.

The papers were smouldering by the time the officers noticed the problem and the blanket was melted, but not alight. The pile of papers was extinguished by the officers before the glass door to the building could sustain damage.

The incident is under investigation. Anyone with information, or who may have seen anything unusual in the downtown area early Thursday, is asked to call St. Thomas police at (519) 631-1224. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
