Fragiskatos re-elected in London North Centre

Voters in London North Centre have given Peter Fragiskatos another mandate in Ottawa.

The Liberal incumbent cruised to victory in Monday's federal election. With 224 of 238 polling stations reporting, Elections Canada had Fragiskatos capturing 42.7 per cent of the vote and a more than 11,000 vote lead over runner-up Sarah Bokhari of the Conservatives.

NDP candidate Dirka Prout was third, followed by Carol Dyck of the Green Party, Salim Mansur of the People's Party of Canada, and Clara Sorrenti of the Communist Party.

"It feels great to be re-elected," Fragiskatos said after he was declared the projected winner in London North Centre. "I want to thank the people of London North Centre for the enormous trust they've placed in me and I don't ignore that at all. I'm quite mindful of it. I take it very seriously."

Fragiskatos' seat wasn't really seen as being in jeopardy, with most observers confident that the first term MP would be re-elected. While he took nothing for granted, he was confident his record spoke for itself.

"We did the same things. We reached out to people and asked them about what matters to them. But there was the four years being in the job, in the role, active in the community and delivering results for the community," he said. "When you're able to show a track record, one that matters to people, people see that and I want to keep working on that."

Fragiskatos returns to the House of Commons, this time as part of a minority government, rather than the majority he was part of in the last session of Parliament. Although the size of the Liberal caucus will be different, he says doesn't plan to change his priorities when it comes to serving his constituents.

"When we focus on the economy, people have a fighting chance. When people are working, that's half the battle. That will remain a focus," he said.
