Suspicious package, gun shots keep police busy

It was a busy weekend for police in Woodstock with officers responding to gunshots, a suspicious package, and a pair of collisions.

Woodstock police and the OPP explosive unit were called to an unnamed factory Friday night after a suspicious backpack was found on the property. Officers determined the bag did not contain explosives and was not a danger to the public.

A short while later, reports of gunfire came in from the city's south end. Officers flooded the area and saw a motorcycle taking off from the area, but could not confirm whether a gun had actually been fired.

Late Friday night, two vehicles collided at the intersection of Vansittart Avenue and Dundas Street. According to police, drugs and alcohol were a factor in the crash. A 31-year-old Woodstock woman has been charged with impaired operation of a vehicle.

The following day, police spotted a pickup truck that had been reported stolen from London. The truck's 66-year-old owner was assaulted during the theft, police said.

Out of concern for public safety, officers did not chase the truck, which was later involved in a crash on Tecumseh Street.

A 29-year-old London man was arrested at the scene. He is charged with possession of stolen property obtained by crime, dangerous driving, flight from police, prohibited driving, and five counts of failure to comply with court orders.
