A 72-year-old St. Thomas woman who was allegedly trying to beat a train when the locomotive slammed into her vehicle is now facing charges.
St. Thomas police were called to the collision at the rail crossing on Flora Street, just north of Kains Street at around 8 p.m. on Thursday.
The crossing's warning equipment, including flashing red lights, were active when a southbound vehicle momentarily stopped at the tracks before proceeding through. The vehicle was hit on the passenger's side by an eastbound train and was dragged approximately 100 feet before the conductor was able to stop.
Fortunately, no one was hurt in the collision.
Witnesses told police the driver of the vehicle hit the gas in an effort to make it across the tracks as the train approached.
A 72-year-old woman is charged with failure to give way to railway equipment at a road crossing and disobeying a railway crossing signal.
