Man charged after London cop stabbed

A 34-year-old London man accused of stabbing a police officer in Old East Village is now facing over half a dozen charges.

London police were called about a man trespassing on private property in the area of Dundas and Elizabeth streets just after 1 a.m. on Tuesday. When police arrived on scene they located a male suspect.

According to police, the man pulled a knife and stabbed an officer who was trying to arrest him. The man then took off from the scene.

The officer suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect was tracked down shortly after with the help of the London police K9 unit. The man was arrested after being tasered.

Joshua Smith, 34, of London is charged with aggravated assault, possessing a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, public mischief, carrying a concealed weapon, failure to comply with condition of judicial release, and entering a prohibited premises.

He has been remanded in custody and will make his second appearance in London court on October 16.
