Firefighter seriously hurt in OEV explosion out of hospital

The London firefighter who was seriously hurt in last week's explosion in Old East Village has been released from hospital.

City officials announced on Friday the unidentified firefighter is now out of hospital and continuing his recovery at home.

In a tweet, Mayor Ed Holder asked the public to continue to respect the injured firefighter and his family's privacy during this difficult time.

The firefighter was one of seven people hurt late on August 14 when a vehicle crashed into a home at 450 Woodman Ave., severing a gas line, which led to the massive explosion.

Three other firefighters, two police officers, and a civilian suffered minor injuries in the blast and were treated and released from hospital in the hours that followed. 450 Woodman was destroyed in the initial explosion, while 448 Woodman and 452 Woodman were demolished last weekend. Repairs are needed on several other homes that were damaged.

The London Professional Fire Fighters Association (LPFFA), in collaboration with the London Fire Department, is collecting get-well cards and messages of support for the injured firefighters. Since the association began stockpiling the well wishes on Wednesday night, the outpouring of support has been "overwhelming," LPFFA President Jason Timlick said.

The injured firefighter's release from hospital comes one day after the woman accused of causing the explosion was charged with eight additional offences.

Daniella Alexandra Leis, 23, of Kitchener is charged with four counts of impaired operation over 80 mg causing bodily harm and four counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. She was previously charged with four counts of impaired operation causing bodily harm.

Leis is scheduled to appear in London court in relation to the 12 charges against her on September 4.
