Elgin OPP officer nearly hit by motorcycle

A 23-year-old London man is facing charges after a motorcycle joy ride ended with an Elgin OPP officer nearly being run over.

Police began getting calls about a motorcycle that was being driven aggressively and making unsafe maneuvers around other vehicles on Wellington Road near St. George Street around 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Attempts by police to stop the bike at John Wise Line and Sunset Road were unsuccessful.

"It again aggressively sped away and passed numerous vehicles unsafely," police said.

Rather than give chase, police opted to flood the area with additional officers, who located the motorcycle in Port Stanley. The driver was arrested after the bike was driven toward an officer who was on foot.

A 23-year-old man is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, and flight from police. He is scheduled to appear in St. Thomas court in relation to the charge on July 30.

Police will be cracking down on aggressive drivers this long weekend and are urging motorists to practice patience on all roadways.
