Two homes evacuated after chemical spill near Thamesford

Two homes had to be evacuated after a transport truck spilled a mixture of chemicals onto the roadway outside of Thamesford.

The Ontario Provincial Police first reported the incident shortly after 8 p.m. on Thursday on Road 68 in Zorra Township.

Fire officials said the truck driver noticed the chemical leak from his vehicle and called 911. Two nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution and the London Fire Department's HAZMAT Team was called to the scene.

Hwy. 2 has been closed between 19th Line and 31st as a result of the spill and police are asking everyone to avoid the area. Police have also closed the 21st Line between Hwy. 2 and Road 66, as well as the 25th Line between Hwy. 2 and Road 66, and the 23rd Line between Hwy. 2 and Road 74.

Youth volunteers practice coastal conservation

Nine young volunteers aged 11 to 17 spent three days exploring and protecting the Lake Huron coastline during the Coastal Conservation Youth Corps' inaugural program in Grand Bend from July 21 to 23.
