UPDATE: Rainfall warning ended

Environment Canada has ended its rainfall warning for  London, as well as Strathroy, Southern Huron County, Eastern Middlesex County, Oxford County and Western Middlesex County.

Significant rainfall will still continue throughout the night.

The rain is expected to turn to snow later in the evening. Up to 4 cm of snowfall accumulation is possible and Environment Canada is warning motorists to be careful of slippery roads while driving.

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) issued a statement on Friday ahead of the rain, and said the rainfall is expected to cause water levels to rise which could cause flooding in some low lying flood plain areas.  While serious flooding is not expected, water levels will likely be elevated throughout the weekend and into the coming week.

The region could see water levels to rise to near bank full conditions with flooding in some low lying flood plain areas, similar to levels experienced earlier this month.

"We want to remind the public to be extremely cautious and stay away from all water bodies," said Teresa Hollingsworth, manager of community and corporate services at the UTRCA. "River banks are very slippery and pose a serious hazard, especially with the cold, fast-moving water. Any ice will be unstable. We encourage parents and guardians to keep children and pets away from all watercourses and off of frozen water bodies."

Conservation officials said they are monitoring the situation and will provide updates if conditions change.
