Cold weather alert extended

Public health officials have extended a cold weather alert for London and Middlesex County as frigid temperatures persist across the region.

The fifth cold weather alert to be issued this season by the Middlesex London Health Unit will remain in place until Wednesday morning. It was originally to be lifted Tuesday morning. But with Environment Canada forecasting the temperature to drop to -16 C overnight and windchill values expected to hit -24, the decision was made to extend it.

Those venturing outdoors are advised to dress in layers and cover any exposed skin to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

Agencies that assist London’s homeless population are being told to prepare for an increase in demand for services. Anyone who spots someone who is outdoors and in distress due to the cold is urged to call London CAReS at 519-667-2273 or 9-1-1 if it is a medical emergency.
