UPDATE: freezing rain warning lifted

Environment Canada has ended a freezing rain warning for London-Middlesex, Oxford County, and Elgin County.

The warning was issued Thursday afternoon, ahead of a band of freezing rain that was expected to move across the region. The icy weather was expected to taper off Thursday evening as the temperature rose above the 0 C mark.

A special weather statement was also issued for much of southwestern Ontario due to strong winds that were expected to arrive in the evening.

The national weather agency said strong southwest winds will gust to 80 km/h, pushing in a cold front that will cause temperatures to plummet quickly. Some areas could see gusts up to 90 km/h.

The strong winds will continue overnight into Friday, slowly dying down in the afternoon. The winds could cause minor tree damage or local power outages, according to Environment Canada.
