Jobless rate drops again

The London area saw a slight drop in the unemployment rate in November, but the news is not all good.

According to figures released Friday by Statistics Canada, the jobless rate in the London-St. Thomas area was 4.8 per cent in November, down from 4.9 per cent in October. But the number of people working in the London census metropolitan area, which includes London, St. Thomas, Strathroy and other surrounding communities, fell by almost 3,000 to approximately 253,400.

The size of the labour force (the number of people working or looking for work) also fell by 3,300. It was down by 1,100 in October after a gain of 600 in September.

Nationally, the unemployment rate fell to 5.6 per cent from 5.8 per cent in October as the economy added over 94,000 new jobs.
