Hurricane Florence grounds fighter jets in London

Three American military aircraft that participated in last weekend's airshow are still at the London International Airport, waiting out Hurricane Florence.

The two U.S. Air Force F-22s and one U.S. Navy F-35 are grounded while it is decided where they should fly to avoid the massive hurricane that is barreling toward America's East Coast.

"The US military isn't one to tell us specifically what they are doing with their planes. Those aircraft stay under heavy security and are under heavy security 24/7," said Dave De Kelver, executive director of Airshow London. "We do know that they are doing maintenance and that they are watching the storm, which is a terrible one."

The Category 4 storm is expected to hit the Carolinas late Thursday night and has forced the U.S. military to move aircraft and ships from its nearby bases out of harm's way.

While the reason behind the F-22s and F-35s extended stay is uncommon, De Kelver notes it is not unusual for aircraft to hang around for a couple days following the airshow.

"Often it is London natives that stick around. They have a little bit of downtime and visit with family, other times it is because of maintenance issues and maintenance that they want to do before they put it back in the air," said De Kelver. "It's not uncommon. We often have aircraft here, people just don't realize it."
