Tips for a safe first day back to school

The return to school for thousands of children Tuesday has prompted London police to issue a few safety reminders for both drivers and students.

Since it will be the first time in two months that school buses have been on the streets, it's recommended drivers allow some extra time to get where they need to go.

"Ensure that you're coming to a complete stop when approaching a school bus with its lights flashing and arm out, that you are far enough behind that bus whenever it stops to pick up or drop the kids off," said Constable Sandasha Bough. "Drivers need to slow down in those school zones and anywhere they see people waiting for the bus or walking to school. A reminder for every day is just to put that phone down so that you are able to pay attention to everything."

The fine for passing a school bus ranges from $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points, while penalties for speeding through a school zone or pedestrian crossover can vary. Extra members of the police traffic management unit will be out patrolling in school zones throughout the first week of classes.

"They will be conducting targeted enforcement in school areas, focusing on distracted driving and speeding," said Bough.

Students walking to and from school are advised to do so with a friend to increase visibility for drivers, only cross at marked crosswalks and pedestrian crossovers, and always look in all directions before entering the roadway.

"It is always a good idea to talk to your parents or guardians ahead of time about the safest route to school or to the bus stop and don't take shortcuts that your parents or guardians aren't aware of," said Bough. "Put the electronics away. Remember to pay attention to everyone around you. If you're riding a bike or scooter be sure to wear a helmet. It is the law if you are under the age of 18."

Kids who take the bus to school are reminded to stay back from the edge of the road and never play in the ditch, always cross in front of the bus where the driver can see you, and not to push or shove when getting on or off the bus.

Police have put together a series of five back-to-school safety videos focused on bicycle safety, railway crossings, safe driving, crossing the street, and bus safety. The videos can be found on the force's social media channels.

"We really want to ensure that kids going back to school, motorists, everybody be careful and look out for each other," said Bough. "For those going back to school have a safe and happy school year."
