Cruiser damaged by rowdy partiers

It appears some college students are starting the school year off on a sour note.

Beer bottles were hurled at London police officers that were sent to break up house parties near Fanshawe College early Monday morning.

A call to 911 indicated there were around 100 people walking in the area of Thurman Circle and Farnsborough Cresent, throwing bottles on the streets. But when officers arrived approximately 500 people poured out of the house parties with some chucking bottles at police.

The flying bottles caused an estimated $500 damage to the windshield of one police cruiser.

“It is extremely discouraging that a small group of students have decided to begin the school year by putting our officers and the community at risk to this degree,” said Supt. Chris Newton. “Our community deserves greater respect.”

Four people from four different Thurman Circle homes were issued provincial offence notices for violation of the city's nuisance by-law, which can result in a fine of up to $10,000.

"Fanshawe has strong partnerships in place to welcome students and to ensure students take their rights and responsibilities seriously as members of our community," the college said in a statement issued Tuesday. "Any student who is found to have broken the code of conduct may face disciplinary sanctions, which can range from a verbal warning to expulsion from the College."

This isn't the first time student parties in northeast London have led to mayhem. In 2012, a St. Patrick's Day bash on nearby Fleming Dr. turned into a riot when thousands of revellers began hurling objects at police and set fire to a TV news truck.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
