A weekend incident in a London neighbourhood now has the attention of Ontario's law enforcement watchdog agency.
The Special Investigations Unit says a 20-year-old man suffered a serious injury shortly after midnight Sunday morning, on Leroy Ave. between Taylor and Elliott Sts., near St. Peter Cemetery.
A preliminary report issued Sunday afternoon by the SIU says a London police officer was driving his cruiser when he suddenly heard a sound. The officer got out of the car and found a man lying injured on the road. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The agency is called in to handle any investigation that involves police if death or serious injury has happened.
SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon says two investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to this case, which involves the primary officer and three witness officers.
London police are not commenting on the incident other than to say the watchdog agency is involved.
"I can confirm that the SIU has invoked as per their mandate in relation to this investigation," said LPS media relations officer J.P. Loberto.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. Anyone who may have any video evidence is asked to upload that video through the SIU website.
