London Getting Cash For Rail Crossing Improvements

The federal government is sending up to $186,800 to London to improve several rail crossings in the city.

London North Centre MP Peter Fragiskatos made the announcement Friday, saying the money will go toward 10 projects.

“While Canada has one of the safest rail systems in the world, improvements can still be made," Fragiskatos said. "This investment will immediately enhance safety for pedestrians and motorists throughout London. I have heard from constituents that these upgrades are needed at our at-grade crossings and this funding will ensure important changes are implemented expeditiously.”

Fragiskatos says the money can be used for things like installation of signage, pavement markings, vegetation removal, resurfacing, and necessary pedestrian safety measures. Among the crossings that will be improved are the ones on Richmond St. just south of Piccadilly St., Highbury Ave. south of Florence St., and Colborne St. south of York St.

According to the federal government, almost half of all railway-related deaths and injuries result from accidents at crossings. This September 23-29 will mark Rail Safety Week, a "national event aimed at increasing awareness of safety around railway operations and highlighting government and industry commitment to making the rail system safer for Canadians."
