Downtown Assault Leaves Man Critical, Three Police Officers Hurt

A 35-year-old man is fighting for life after a vicious beating near the downtown that also saw four London police officers attacked while trying to make an arrest.

Police were called to the area of Wellington St. and Horton St. about an injured man laying on the pavement around 6:40pm on Monday. The man was unconscious when police arrived. He was rushed to hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Investigators determined the man had been kicked and hit several times with a metal chair.

When officers approached a suspect, they were assaulted. Two of the officers suffered serious injuries, a third had minor injuries, and a fourth was not hurt.

Damion Buckley, 31, of no fixed address is charged with one count of aggravated assault, and two counts each of assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm, and assaulting a peace officer. He is scheduled to appear in London court by video link on July 5.
