Freezing Rain Expected Over The Weekend

The cold weather hasn't left the region yet, and it could bring freezing rain over the weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Sarnia-Lambton, London-Middlesex, Elgin County, and Oxford County advising of a slow-moving weather system that is expected to a significant risk of freezing rain Saturday afternoon.  The freezing rain is expected to last until Sunday morning before changing to more heavy rainfall.

The weather agency says the region is expected to get around 25-30 mm of rain over the weekend, which is about half of the month’s average rainfall.  The rain is expected to taper off on Monday.

The freezing rain could cause ice accumulations of up to 20 mm in some places.  That combined with gusty northeast winds may result in power outages due to fallen tree limbs and power lines.

Roads may also become icy between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, and flooding is also possible in some areas later in the day on Sunday.

More targeted weather watches or warnings from Environment Canada are likely to be issued on Friday.
