After spending the last eight years on London City Council, London Mayor Matt Brown has decided to step away from city politics this fall.
In a statement released Friday morning, Brown officially announced that he will not seek re-election.
"I have decided not to seek another term as mayor. I will not be running for re-election in 2018," he said in the statement.
Brown's statement goes on to say that he is "proud of what has been accomplished so far this term and the incredible strides this Council has made toward its vision for London." He added, "change is not always easy, but we have set the groundwork for the London we want for our children and grandchildren."
While he won't be seeking re-election, Brown announced he is still committed to finishing his current term as mayor.
"We have truly built this city inward and upward over the last three and a half years," said Brown. "I remain focused on this mandate in the months to come."
