If your long weekend plans include a road trip, you'll want to make sure everyone in the vehicle buckles up.
London police are joining police services across the province in a seatbelt enforcement blitz over the Easter weekend. Starting Friday, officers will be on the lookout for seatbelt infractions, which includes not wearing one or wearing one improperly.
“The act of putting on a seatbelt is so simple, and yet the consequences of not, are potentially devastating,” said Sergeant Sean Harding. “Everyone in a vehicle has a responsibility to their community, their families and themselves to buckle up every time they are in a vehicle.”
Roughly 29% of drivers killed and 10% of drivers seriously injured in crashes across the country in 2015 were not wearing a seatbelt, according to figures from Transport Canada.
Last year, London police laid a total of 376 seatbelt-related charges. Over the first three months of 2018, 110 people have been busted not wearing their seatbelts while traveling city streets.
The fine for not wearing a seatbelt or wearing one improperly is $240, plus a victim surcharge.
