Londoners Reminded Not To Burn Brush

As Londoners begin yard cleanup after the harsh winter months, local fire officials are out with a reminder that it is illegal to burn brush within the city.

The London Fire Department calls it "good practice" to clean up debris and limit the amount of flammable vegetation surrounding residences. However, any excess brush collected from a yard should be placed curbside on the designated collection day or dropped off anytime at one of the city's four EnviroDepots.

“With spring outdoor cleanup starting, we know some folks choose to burn brush and yard debris on their property,” said Acting Deputy Fire Chief Jack Burt in a statement issued Tuesday. “Burning brush is not allowed under the City of London’s Open Air Burning By-law.”

Recreational backyard fires in containers are allowed under the bylaw.

“Whether in the backyard of your home, the cottage or at a campground, make fire safety a priority,” said Burt. “Open air burning, especially if left unattended, can become difficult to control and can result in a serious widespread fire.”

Burt is encouraging anyone with questions about open-air burning to call the fire department before starting a fire in their yard.
