Flooded Roads A Headache For Drivers

Londoners making their morning trek into work Wednesday had nearly a dozen flooded streets to dodge.

As heavy rain continued to fall and snow melt away due to mild temperatures, the City of London was forced to close four more city streets around 6:20am. That was on top of the six roads the city closed Tuesday afternoon because of flooding.

Roads that are closed due to flooding are as follows:

  •  Wonderland Rd., north and southbound, at Riverside Dr.
  •  Windermere Rd. between Doon Dr. and Adelaide St. North
  •  Walnut St. from Riverside Dr. to Cavendish Cres.
  •  Wyatt St. from Wharncliffe Rd. North to Cavendish Cres.
  •  Hamilton Rd. between Commissioners Rd. and Clarke Rd.
  •  Dingman Rd. between Old Victoria Rd. and Highbury Rd.
  •  Westminster Rd. east of Wonderland Rd.
  •  Hume St. at Sycamore St.
  • Empress Ave. between Argyle St. and Blackfriars St.
Third St. between Dundas St. and Parkhurst Ave. and Pine St. at Sycamore were closed Tuesday but were reopened by the city on Wednesday morning.

"As rain continues, residents are being asked to stay clear of parklands along both sides of the Thames River, as well as to avoid any natural water bodies and stormwater ponds as these waters could be dangerous," city officials said in a statement.

To prepare and protect against basement and yard flooding the city suggests the following:

  • If you have a backwater valve and/or sump pump, ensure they are in good working order and are operational during this time
  • Keep your drains unobstructed – do not pour grease down the drain or flush objects down the toilet
  • Throughout the year take a look around your property to make sure the ground is sloping away from your house and downspouts are extended four to six feet away from the house. Direct
  • your downspouts where water can be easily absorbed, such as your lawn or flower bed.
  • Inspect your basement walls and floor for cracks.
Londoners who are experiencing basement or yard flooding can call the city at 519-661-4570 between 8:30am to 4:30pm or 519-661-4965 after hours.

Since Monday between 40 to 60 mm of rain has fallen across the region, according to Environment Canada. The wet weather is expected to taper off Wednesday afternoon as the temperature drops to more seasonal values.
