Province Invests $67.4M For New Schools, Upgrades

The province is putting up millions of dollars to build two new schools in London, one in the southeast-end, the second in the north-end.

London North Centre MPP Deb Matthews announced $67.4-million on Wednesday for three new schools, two school additions, and two retrofit projects at schools in southwestern Ontario.

The seven projects will also include six new child care rooms with 112 new licensed child care spaces.

"I am thrilled our government is investing in these projects that are so important to our region. This is great news for so many families and the 2,300 students who will benefit from new and improved schools," said Matthews.

The Thames Valley District School Board is getting $14-million for a new school in Summerside that will be big enough for 500 students. The public board is also getting $9.7-million to build additions, which will cut down on the number of portables, at Masonville Public School and Tweedsmuir Public School

The London District Catholic School Board will receive $10.5-million to build a new elementary school in north London able to accommodate over 500 students. The exact location, design, and name of the new school will be revealed sometime within the next year.

“Our schools in the north part of the city are bursting with students. A new school in the area will relieve the pressure on severely overcrowded existing schools and also be able to accommodate new students moving into an area that is experiencing significant residential development," said John Jevnikar, chair of the Catholic board of trustees.

St. Bernadette's Catholic Elementary School at 155 Tweedsmuir Ave. is getting $3.2-million to expand the administration area and three additional classrooms.

Outside of London, the Lambton Kent District School Board was awarded $27.4-million for a new school in the Forest area that will have the capacity for 1,024 students and an additional 24 child care spaces.

Over $2-million will go to Tecumseh Public School in Chatham for retrofitting.
