Influenza On The Rise In Middlesex-London Region

Influenza is continuing to rapidly spread across the London-Middlesex region.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit said over the last three weeks, there has been a significant increase in influenza activity.

As of January 6, there were 33 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A reported to the health unit, as well as 59 cases of influenza B. One case reported having both influenza A and B.  Of those reports, 50 were hospitalized and three died.  There were also six new influenza outbreaks declared in local hospitals, long-term care homes, and retirement homes.

Health officials say while the increase in flu cases is typical for this time of year, the number of influenza B cases is higher than expected.

Health officials are encouraging local residents to get their seasonal influenza vaccine.  As well, hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent influenza. Anyone with flu is advised to stay home to avoid spreading influenza.
