An Ontario Provincial Police officer escaped serious injury after his cruiser was struck on Hwy 401.
The OPP in Middlesex County says the officer was responding to a single-vehicle crash on the westbound 401 near Putnam Rd around noon Saturday. While the officer was with the vehicle, which had struck a light post, his cruiser was hit from behind by a black pickup truck.
The cruiser was fully-marked and had its emergency lights on. Neither the officer nor the driver of the pickup were hurt.
The pickup driver was not charged.
Ontario Provincial Police are warning drivers to drive according to conditions with numerous crashes on area roadways.
The OPP`s West Region says via its Twitter account that the drive along Hwy 401 east of London is treacherous due to snow squalls that have been moving through the area. With road conditions deteriorating, police say that is resulting in a lot of collisions.
As of Saturday evening, at least 70 collisions have been reported. The OPP says many drivers are going too fast for the current road conditions.
